As the Cool Up programme gains momentum, we had the great opportunity to bring together actors and stakeholders from the technical, policy, and finance communities across Cool Up partner countries for a regional conference.

The ‘Realising Opportunities for Sustainable Cooling’ conference was built on Cool Up’s learnings and outputs to explore specific sustainable cooling and natural refrigerant technologies, policy strategies, and financing solutions to reduce cooling demand in Cool Up countries and throughout the MENA region.

The conference was focused on facilitating regional exchange and relationship building. It was structured as a series of plenary and simultaneous sessions with several opportunities for informal networking and exchange between participants. Plenary sessions brought together all conference attendees to hear from high-level policy officials across the four Cool Up partner countries – Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Türkiye – as well as industry leaders on key trends in cooling and refrigeration. Simultaneous sessions dove into the details of sustainable cooling accommodating different perspectives on cooling demand as a socio-technical topic.

The conference was organised across three themes: the economics of sustainable cooling, implementing sustainable cooling, and creating enabling conditions for sustainable cooling. Session topics included but were not limited to:

  • Business cases for natural refrigerants
  • Natural refrigerants in practice
  • Aligning sustainable cooling with climate ambitions and NDCs
  • Approaches to national cooling plans
  • Integrating energy efficiency into the cooling sector
