The Cool Up team co-hosted a side event at COP26 on 4 November in the EU pavilion in Brussels entitled Upscale energy efficiency financing – identifying and overcoming the investment gain. The event, which was also streamed online, was hosted by the European Commission’s (EC) Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) and co-organised by the Energy Efficiency Financial Institutions Group (EEFIG) and Cool Up.

Guidehouse’s Dr. Andreas Hermelink participated on behalf of Cool Up and highlighted how energy efficiency financing mechanisms can be scaled up for the sustainable cooling transition and what lessons from energy efficiency can be applied to the cooling sector. The event was designed as a space for recommendations to policymakers on how to upscale energy efficiency investments. It included a discussion on technical recommendations, scaling demand, ad-hoc technical assistance, and training for loan officers.

Cool Up’s participation in the panel highlighted the need to exchange best practices towards creating an energy efficiency financial network, while underlining that upscaling financing cannot be done by one organisation alone and the need to collaborate. Cool Up also provided both cross-regional and developing country perspectives.

“What we are talking about here is not just climate warming, but also ozone depletion so what we do in Cool Up is marry these two topics - to combat climate change but also protect the ozone layer”.
