Cool Up webinar explores PFAS risks and climate-friendly cooling in Türkiye
On 14 May 2025, Cool Up hosted a webinar focused on the environmental risks posed by PFAS—commonly known as “forever chemicals”. The session explored how the cooling sector in Türkiye can align with the Kigali Amendment while avoiding the harmful impact of these persistent substances.
The webinar, titled “Why Refrigerant Choice Matters – Complying with the Kigali Amendment and Avoiding Environmental Harm Caused by ‘Forever Chemicals’”, was organized in cooperation with UNDP Türkiye and Öko-Recherche. Moderated by Barbara Gschrey from Öko-Recherche, the event featured expert insights and country-specific examples from Türkiye.
Zeynep Gökçen Asan (UNDP Türkiye) introduced Cool Up’s activities and demo projects using natural refrigerants in Türkiye. Dr. Kadir Isa (SOSIAD) addressed refrigerant selection in the context of PFAS regulations, highlighting both local and EU perspectives. Prof. Michael Kauffeld (Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences) emphasized the environmental threat posed by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), describing PFAS as the third major environmental challenge after ozone depletion and global warming. Sinisa Prodanovic (Öko Recherche) provided an update on EU legislation targeting PFAS and its implications for the cooling sector.
The webinar concluded with a Q&A session, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and innovation in developing climate-friendly cooling solutions.
