Thematic Group Meetings Egypt
Thematic Group Meetings are organized as national workshops by the Cool Up programme to share project results with stakeholders from different sectors and provide opportunities for cross-learning and knowledge sharing.
Thematic Group Meeting Egypt – Policy Group
On 14 March 2023, Cool Up hosted its 4th Policy Thematic Group Meeting in Cairo, Egypt as a hybrid event. The event was planned in direct cooperation with the Ministry of Environment in Egypt, represented by the National Ozone Unit (NOU) at the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA).
The workshop aimed at bringing together stakeholders from the policy sector, including ministries’ representatives and experts, to discuss the importance of initiating and drafting a National Cooling Action Plan (NCAP) for Egypt. The National Cooling Action Plan works as a roadmap to holistically support the transition towards sustainable cooling practices and promoting the use of future proof and environment-friendly refrigerants. A NCAP also supports compliance with international agreements such as the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
The event kicked-off with welcome remarks by Dr. Mohamed Salheen (Integrated Development Group), Eslam Mahdy (Guidehouse), and Dr. Ezzat Lewis (Head of NOU, and Climate Change Unit Egypt). An introduction of the project and the 2023 workplan was presented by Dr. Norhan El Dallal (Integrated Development Group). This was followed by a technical focus session with a presentation on the Roadmap to a NCAP by Felix Heydel (Öko-Recherche) and the Opportunities and Best Practices for a NCAP by Antoine Azar, (United Nations Development Programme). The session closed with a panel discussion on the areas of priority for an Egyptian NCAP. The panelists were Dr. Ezzat Lewis (NOU), Dr. Omar Abdelaziz (AUC) and Dr. Hesham Safwat (Ashrae). The panel was jointly moderated by Dr. Mohamed Salheen and Eslam Mahdy.
